Just weeks after learning that he had been given an Oscar nomination for his screenplay dubbed Nebraska, Bob Nelson has something else to smile about. Nelson, 57, has just landed a new pilot order with Amazon for his new coming-of-age comedy dubbed Highston.
Highston is a comedy that has been written by Nelson, with Sacha Baron Cohen, popular for their work in Borat and Bruno being the shows, executive producers. Other well-known individuals who will be involved with the show are Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton who will be directing the series.
Highston, a single-camera project, is about a 19-year old called Highston Liggetts who is perched on the age of adulthood. When he comes face to face with the world, he does not understand a single thing and just like Elwood P. Dowd, he ends up retreating into his creative imagination, where his companions and mentors are his famous friends.
The series executive producers will be Nelson, Cohen and Todd Schulman and Bob Friedman from Bungalow Media + Entertainment.
This is not the first time that Nelson has been involved in comedy, before embarking on working on his first screenplay, Nebraska, the 57-year old has worked on a local TV sketch-comedy which was aired in Seattle. Following his first screenplay, Nelson wrote and directed a feature dubbed Confirmation which starred Clive Owen.
The move by Amazon order Nelson’s comedy to pilot comes as no surprise given that Amazon’s original programming strategy has been largely based on comedy. In fact, comedy was the genre that launched Amazon’s original series and in addition to that it has delivered the first major awards for Amazon.
